Basic property law holds "finders keepers, losers weepers." Now, that only applies if property is LOST. If its not lost, but just misplaced, you have an obligation to make reasonable efforts to find the proper owner. In your hypothetical, the money is obviously misplaced, because nobody loses cash in a trunk. So, you need to turn it in to the authorities. Most states will return misplaced property to the person who finds it (you), within a certain time period if the original owner isn't located. So you might have 60 or 90 days to wait before getting the cash you've found. Or somebody might come forward and you're out of luck. Either way, thats the legal thing to do.

Financing a used car with bad credit could get very expensive. Every dealer will try and take advantage of you, regardless if they are new car dealer or used. Expect 50% downpayment and 12-20% APR. The best way is to purchase with cash from a private seller. But make sure to pay the $100 and have it thoroughly checked out by AAA or a mechanic.

Contact local law enforcement agency, tell them what you found. Think about this: if the money is from drug dealing, what are the chances that residue of drugs is on the money? How would like a drug-sniffing dog finding it on you or in your car? Play it safe by reporting it. You will probably be allowed to keep it, but it is better if you make a report about it to the police.

They were supposed to clean the car before selling it to you. I would keep the money and I am an honest person. Once you purchased the car, then everything in it became your property.

the law says turn it in. there was a case just settled in Edmonton where a person opened a package delivered in his mailbox that had $18,000 in it. He turned it in to the police. They askes the person it was adressed to, to claim it. That person refused to claim it. When the guy who turned it in asked about it the Cops said they were going to keep it so he sued them for it and won. But he did need to sue them in court.

As you must suspect this money was obtained in an illegal manner, you should bring it to the police.

If no one claims it within 30 days, they will return it to you. Claims should be investigated.
