to elect candidates, generally with a singular focus: the Republicans started out as an anti-Slavery group, for instance. The Federalists sought a strong central government. The Democrats started out advocating for a balance between federal and state governments.

They raise money and work to get their side elected. They choose candidates that fit their needs, and support them via advertising, door-to-door and phone campaigning, letters to the editor, rallies and events, and whatever else it takes.

They are formed for the same reasons different churches and clubs are formed: People like to belong to and support a group that has similar beliefs to their own.

Political groups investigate, promote, campaign for and vote and recruit votes for the candidates they support. The elected officials supposedly continue on to represent those beliefs and desires of their supporters while in office.
