when i try to put a picture or anything for my background, i cant select anything from the appearance menu in the control panel. the box is "greyed out" and i can't scroll and select. i can only choose a solid color for my background. when i shut down, i see the picture i select as background, but it never will be displayed during normal computer activity. i've tried everything i can think of to fix this weird problem...
any suggestions????? thanks!!! p.s. i'm running xp home ed. on a year old toshiba satellite laptop.

Well that is not normal and I am not sure how to fix that it could be a bad xp disk depending how long you had it I would take it back for another one.

try it again

control panel
appearance and themes
display
desktop

or

Right click on desktop
property's
desktop

or

go to IE

search for a picture you like

right click on it

choose "Set as desktop background"

Try going to your picture folder on your computer. If I right click on the picture it gives me several choices as to what to do. One of my options is to set picture as desktop background. Left click on it, it should change your background. Maybe that'll work.

I'd defrag, run spybot, ad-aware, virus scan, etc... If all check out fine, I'd do a system restore back to the last time it was working ok.
