what did they do to support him. were they devastated? did they do stuff to show support? or were they always there for him? anything?

yea i know he wanted to be taller than everybody, but is that it? i mean was there any thing else they did for him?

They supported him by building a tall platform that he could stand on so his face would be visible above the top of the little podium he was standing near.

You need to think that France at this time was going from dark time.
The revolution happens after a several year of starvation. The revolution ended in civil war.
Finally the other european monarchies were invading France to put again in place a monarchy.
Napoleon was able face to enemy to reunite the country and won against the odd not a country but a continent.

His was a tyran and an outstanding leader. That 's true that his closer guards (grognards) fought for him up to death.

Several hundred thousands of people join him to fight ...

If you consider that war in general has never been popular (people were very reluctant to leave their fileds and their cattle)
that 's a lot ...
If you consider there is a gap between supporting somebody and being ready to fight and die for him That's a lot as well.

They thought he was a military genious so they supported his military endeavours. People enlisted in the army and he got all kinds of money for it. They loved the guy because he conquered most of Europe. But he was thrown into exile ( kicked out the country and forced him to live on an island where he couldn't cause any more trouble ) after his huge failure in Russia. He's screw ups nearly bankrupted the country.
