I was just sitting down at the dinner table when I saw something moving in the light fixture in my kitchen (it is one of those long box flourescent lights). It was a mouse or rat, very small. It quickly crawled back out though, I guess through the hole where the fixture connects to the ceiling. Anyway, please give me suggestions on what to do to get rid of it (I am not against animal cruelty in this case lol). I keep a VERY clean house, all of our food is kept picked up, and it is a very new house (just built in January) so I don't understand how or why it is in my house. Hopefully it is only in the attic, but I am scared it will get into the actual house. Tell me how to get rid of it and what to look for to find out where it got in at.

Mice can get in anywhere even when you open the door to come in. It doesn't take much. Best way to get rid of them is a trap. Theres all kinds of traps but keep it simple. The old fashion snap traps work the best. For some reason mice no longer attracted to cheese. The best BATE is Hot Dogs cold or peanut butter.I like the trap that has a red plastic plateform with holes to put the bate. I have found they are easier to set and harder for those cute little meace to grab the bate. Happy Hunting.

It doesn't matter how clean your house is. Mice are coming in at this time of year to find a warm place to spend the winter. Go to the hardware store and buy some mouse traps. Bait them with peanut butter. Make sure all of the food in the house is put away. Also buy some plain steel wool and use it to plug up any holes from the outside. Mice can get in though even a tiny hole.

When the weather starts getting cooler this time of year, the mice are seeking warmth and will get into a house by whatever means it can -- any openings. If you have an attached garage, they can get in that way, or they can get in through the chimney, which probably happened in your case since you saw it in the light fixture. Or they can come in through a fireplace, if you have one.

There are several ways to get rid of mice. There are specific poisons that kill mice, but if you have children or pets, I wouldn't recommend that. There's the time-honored mousetrap with cheese for bait that's fairly effective. And as a last resort, either get a cat or borrow one from a friend or neighbor. Good luck.

Unfortunately, having a clean house doesn't stop the little creatures. They are looking for a warm place for the winter. You can fill the holes they might be going through in the house with steel wool. They can't chew through that. If you have any cracks/holes in your foundation, fill it with the type of insulate that comes in a tube, expands and hardens. All you can really do to get rid of them in the house if they keep finding their way in, usually in the basement, is traps with peanut butter or D-con.

you can also get mice in feed sacks, dog food, etc. from the grocery store. cockroaches are the same way. a humane but more costly method is to buy a non-lethal trap like a tin-cat.

Mice prefer peanut butter over cheese. Use peanut butter on the trap.
