I have 4 bearded dragons and the trick is you have to hold them every day to get them used to being held. How old is your dragon? I have one that didn't like to be held but my daughter holds it every day and now she is getting used to being held. you just have to work with it all the time and eventually they will get use to you. have fun

Bearded Dragons can become very tame w/ regular gentle handling. First, just pet the dragon in its cage. Lightly rub on top of the head, along the back, and nder the chin. Move slowly, and don't jerk your hand. To pick it up, slide the hand you want the dragon on under his/her head chest palm up, while coming from behind w/ the other hand. If the the dragon is skittish, it will crawl onto your hand to get away from the other one. Once you have it on your hand, support the animal w/ both hands underneath it. You can cup your hands around it, but DON'T squeeze. Once the dragon is tame, you can just reach right in and gently lift it up.

Bearded dragons aren't really 'touchy-feely' kinda pets. You do need to be able to pick him up to move him or examine him though. You need to start gently, just getting him used to you being around. Don't grab at him, just move gently and slowly and start off by just touching him. I find that most lizards react best to being touched on the sides of the neck and body. Touching on the top of the head and body tends to send them into panic attacks. When you do go to pick him up, try to scoop from underneath rather than grab from above. Grabbing from above seems to activate their hawk-avoidance reflexes and they just go nuts. Obviously, as with any lizard, you should avoid grabbing the tail at all costs, or you will end up with a bit of lizard in your hand and a stumpy lizard in your tank! Oh, and always disinfect your hands after handling any lizard, they pass on salmonella poisoning! This is inevitable and is nothing to do with how clean the tank is or how healthy the lizard looks, it is just a fact of life with pet reptiles.

By the beard? Just asking in case I'm ever compelled to pick one up. A friend of mine has damn near every kind of reptile known to exist - even a Kimodo.
I prefer pets willing to play fetch and which know what 'stay!' means.
