I'm making a cape from satin and it needs to look old and tattered and have a ragged edge and a few holes here and there. I want the edges to look similar to the edges of Emily's dress/veil from The Corpse Bride.

I want it to look like I've been murdered and my cape is old--so I don't want that cutsey "cut out" look like you see on pre-made costumes in stores. I want it to look creepy and old!

Use a lighter or a lit insense and burn the edges with the ligthter, and put small holes close together with the insense then rip it. It looks more natural than poking a hole in it and then ripping it. Just make sure you are careful not to light the whole thing on fire. and do it on a flat cool surface that is hard and nonflamable.

Also wash it several times to get the newness out of it.

Tear it across the grain and then against it. Pull some threads here and there. Throw it in the dryer if it will not shrink. Wear it to bed and all the day when you are home. Just rip it here and there at the bottom and remove some of the lose threads so it looks freyed a bit. Once you start, you should get the idea as you see results.

You can soak it, in part or whole in coffee to make it look real old, the just make a few cuts on the whole thing and rip parts of the edges, then run the whole thing through the washer and dryer a few times and that should mess it up, but won't look 'just done today'

Gather the fabric together into kind of a column. Twist it. Take a piece of sandpaper and rub it along the twisted edges to distress the fabric and dull the satin finish at certain parts.

Spread it out and gather again in another direction and repeat..

If you do not repeat this in several directions, it will look tie-died rather than aged.

make a snip at the edge of the fabric and start tearing. Once you have the little threads you can pull at them to make as much ragged as you want. To make holes, poke a small hole in the fabric and start stretching it out till it is the size you want it. Now take it out side and rub it in the dirt.
