Probably every 2-3 hours for a couple of minutes my PC virtually stops. When my Task manager finally appears, theres about 8 processes running to do with LiveUpdate. Is there a way to cut these down to maybe Twice a day. I'm running Norton Internet security 2007.
I know I'll probably get answers saying "Get Rid"
but until it runs out, I'd like to find a solution.

Thanks to all who answered so quickly.
Some great answers.
I've found the LiveUpdate settings and I'll see how it goes updating twice a day. If I can get the timing right it will only update when I'm at work and when I'm asleep.
Will seriously consider removing it completely but a bit worried about the comments saying it doesn't completely leave your system.
Once again, Thanks to all.

I am sorry, that I must tell you what you really don't want to hear. "Get Rid". In my spare time when I can find any, I test all antivirus/spyware program to see if they perform as claimed. What is rated 1-2-3, or purchased is not always the best.

Nortons an Mcafee have been garbage for many years and the both of them keep getting worse each year. One would think that they would evolve over the years, this is not the case with them.

First they are a resource hog. Second in my own personal opinon from testing them they are unable to recognize a virus in their face, or even know how to get rid of a virus. Plus with Nortons, when you go to remove the program you are left with over 300 fragments glued to all of your files/folders and hidden all over your system.. Now you will play H E L L, getting them out or finding them. Plus they can cause conflict with your system.

There is no real solution for Nortons as it really uses all your available resources and almost brings your system to a stand still.

You either live with the problem or remove Nortons and consider it a lesson learned in life.

If you want a free good antivirus that is low on resources here are two. The first one I use in my secondary pc. The second one I use in my primary pc an I have never had one virus in over nine years.

http://www.avast.com Excellent state of the art technology that will give you automatic updates an all new versions. Scans all 175,000 objects in my system and removes any all all virus if found. Plus you get automatic daily updates. An all new versions are free. All you have to do is give them your email address so they can send you a free key that is good for one year. After one year you must renew your key. The corporate version is the same, they just make corporate pay. So make sure you download their home personal use version.

Now if you like to spend money, I use this antivirus in my primary pc and the Government of China uses this antivirus program.

http://www.filseclab.com This program is out of Beijing, China./

You only pay a one time fee for life. You will get all new versions, frequent updates an excellent support for life. The one time fee for life is $29.99 (You can't beat it, as all other companies charged you every year to renew or you don't get any updates).

Here is the details on this program.

Being a clinical psychiatrist I have a moral and legal obligation to keep my pc 100% clean from all virus/spyware/malware.

I tested every free and purchase antivirus system known. An I found only one that actually works 100%. Never had a virus or spyware in my system in nine years.

Go to, www.filseclab.com and download thier Twister AntiTrojan Virus program. (You will have to pay a small one time fee). You will never have to pay an annual fee for updates, support or new versions. The one time fee is for life. ($29.99)

The software company is located in Beijing, China. They have excellent support, frequent large signature updates an as always all new versions are free. No annual fee for anything.

Comes with a real time scanner that really works. Actually I am quite amazed over the nine years how well it works.

Scans memory on startup.
Real time scanning in the background.
Open any webpage with an embedded trojan/spyware or malware and scanner will clean on the spot. An It is really removed from your system.

Download any kind of program from zips, all compressed files, software files, music, etc, etc, an if there is a hidden embedded trojan, spyware, malware, this program will stop the download and clean. An will advise you to end the download.

Will even find a virus in the installer wizard, like "Wise Installer". And will stop the installation while it is being installed and clean. Plus this program always will trace back who installed the trojan.

I had a trojan in and wizard installer. Twister caught the trojan and stopped the installation. I wrote the origianl company and told them the wizard installer had an embedded trojan to steal your data. The company now uses thier own installer.

You can't beat this software for a one time purchase fee only. Actually I don't know of any antivirus progam that even comes close to this state of the art technology.

All I can say it is worth the one time fee. Your pc cost alot of money and you don't want it destroyed. Plus your privacy is protected at all times.

There is nothing in it for me to praise this program. I tell it like it is. If it is garbage then I will say so.

Excuse my english.

Though am not conversant with Norton Internet Security 2007. Norton generally slows the computer down. Dont know why. But the best you can do is you either reschedule Automatic Liveupdate to like once a day or deactivate it; that means you will manually start Liveupdate anytime you feel like you are less busy and Norton can update whatever it wishes to update.
This can be done in Settings somewhere when you open the application. In earlier versions, its either you see a settings button or advanced button to configure Norton to the user specifications.

Windows has a number of design flaws, resulting in it becoming slower and slower and not lasting very long. You've probably heard more than once someone say "My computer is getting sluggish, I'm gonna reinstall". Reinstalling Windows solves the problem... until next time. You may think this is just how computers work, they're very new technology, and still not really stable. Well, try Linux and you'll be surprised. Five years from now, your system will be just as fast and responsive as the day you installed it, not to mention that you won't have any viruses, adwares, trojans, worms, etc., that would force you reinstall anyway.

If you computer is more than a couple of years old, it isn't able to run it. Norton just uses too many system resources for an older computer. There isn't a solution except to use a different anti-virus.

You can get a good free on here, and it doesn't use anywhere near the resources. http://free.grissoft.com

You might try opening Live Update and going into options and selecting update times. I'm a computer repair tech and yeah, my suggestion is that Norton and McAfee make your life much more worse with them then without, but I understand wanting to maintain your investment. I haven't actually CONFIGURED Live Update, but that is were I'd start.

Bought a new comp with Norton installed - first thing I did was
take it away and download the free AVG.

Had many problems with Norton in the past.

Well, go to http://free.grisoft.com
Download both the antivirus and antispyware programs.
They are both FREE!!
Boot to safe mode, UNINSTALL everything by Norton/Symantec.
Install both AVG programs.
Reboot.
Go to Symantec's website, download and run their cleanup tool (they have it because Norton sucks and doesn't uninstall completely).
