My father and I are having a hard time with this issue, but he is charging me $150 rent and i think thats too much because i'm never there, i'm always hanging out with friends or at work, (more at work than anything) but anyway, he said that it pays for all the things that i use, i don't ever eat there and when i do i'm making history, i use the water every morning to shower, and electrical to do my hair. Most of the time when i am there i'm sleeping. I have never asked him for money since i've had a job and before that i didn't for awhile because i didn't really have anything to pay for. It would be one thing if i sat around and did nothing and didn't have a job at all but thats not the case! I'm not opposed to paying rent because i am 19 and it would be time to take on larger responsibilities but i don't think that i'm using $150 worth of things. Tell me what ya'll think.

Take a hint. Time to move. He is only doing you a favor by getting you use to paying to live, just like everyone else. You have a job. Time to find your place. Move out. Better sooner than later.
You will discover you Dad is really your best friend. You will know this when you are standing in your new place...and stuff is breaking... and you know you can call him any time.
$150 barely covers utilities...between cell phone, electrical, heating cable, internet... It cost money to occupy space.
You have gone 19 years and only now you discover it cost money to stay alive? Be thankful it is just money. What happens when you don't have a job? Life doesn't owe you a thing.

Sounds like your father is trying to teach you the value of money and some responsibility. Just image if you were renting an apartment. You would still have to pay rent and utilities whether you were there or not. You are getting off cheap. Better utilize your free time and go to college, so $150 can feel like a tip and not a week of labor.

I know its difficult to see it this way now but your father is doing you a favour. He is doing what every parent should do and that is to prepare you for the real world. Look around and see if you can live cheaper and just as well elsewhere? Take everything into account, you know washing, heating etc. If you can then discuss this with him and come to some agreement. You don't say if this is per week or per month? What you are paying for is the facility of having a place to live.

I think $150/month for a place to shower, sleep & keep my stuff would be a deal. Im never home & I pay $750/month for an apt.
I think your dad knows what hes talking about. If you dont then move out & pay 4 times that for a place you'll never be at either-

Yes, $150 is way too much. When I was 19 years old, I don't pay anything, not my dorm, my food, or my university education. Your father is definitely ripping you off. He is to financially support you through the university until you obtain your Bachelor degree, and the kick you out on your own.

150 is alot less than if you had an apartment or a house you were renting. Why not ask your dad how he came up with that amount? talk it over with him, he may be able to point out where the 150 is going.

150 a day? A week? A month?
Lets say its $150 a month. Where else can you have a clean bed and a shower 30 nights in a row, where its safe and clean for less?

Economics 101...supply and demand. I agree with all the other answers that I have read. Compare your alternatives and if you find one cheaper, more convenient, or more amiable to your situation, use it. Good luck.
If you really want to freeload, try government assisted living. You could probably get a similar deal and it would be yours. A lot of Americans are jumping on the "entitlement mentality" bandwagon, why not you? It may not be safe, but you come and go as much or as little as you please.

$150??? WOW your ripping you dad off. A storage unit alone for all your stuff would be close to that and a storage unit doesn't even have running water. Stop complaining and pay the man or go find a place of your own!
