If you know the person, you can better tell the difference in voice pitch and body language. Generally, if they avert their eyes, touch their face, or hesitate on what should be an easy enough question, there's a strong possibity they are lying.

depending on the person...theres usually always somthing that a certain person does when lieing....either it be one of the following....
when they are telling you this story if they are lying than most of the time they cant look you straight in the eye, and always trying to look away when talking.
sometime people studder, or mix up the story, stumbleing to find the words.
some bite thier buttom lip, or chew their nails
if they have any other bad habbits such as smoking they usually will light one up right after if not durning the story
figets alot with hair or any close object infront of them.
These are just a few things that people who cant lie very good do. But alot of people can lie good and cover it up. the best way is to do research on the lie and be your own detective and but the puzzle together yourself, ask lots of questions and see if you cant catch them in a lie.

you know this subject is really easy to get misunderstood
usually if you know that person really good i am talking about family members or long term friends its easier to tell when they lie. Common reactions:
1.the person is not looking in your eyes while he is basically telling you the lie.
2.He or she is playing with their hands and seem nervous
3. He or she blushes
4. stutter
the best thing you could do though is FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS

pay no attention to the "you can tell by their eyes" theory. they will use their eyes to lie...like another answerer said...pay attention to the rest of their body language...playing with their fingers, clenching fists, tapping and wiggling feet..they make an overdone effort to appear relaxed..sometimes they become too stiff..their faces are relaxed, but their bodies freeze
verbally, they hesitate to answer...they answer "HUH?" immediately after you ask a question that was clearly heard.
being bold to confront them? they react with anger. (it should be slight shock and concern as to why you think theyre lying.) they react overly non chalant. they laugh like hyhena. oh..they super nice, or more nice than normal, all of a sudden
im surrounded by liars and i see right through them most of the time.

I watch their eyes and body language - if they cannot keep eye contact and shift around a lot I usually doubt what they are telling me.
And, a good gut instinct helps too...

Look for something unusual they're doing. Tell them to look into your eyes and tell it to you straight. If they can't they're lying. Good luck!

the biggest thing....(if you're in person)...is looking at their body language. If they're avoiding eye contact, biting their lip, fidgeting, then they're probably lying to you.

A good sign of whether someone is listening to you is they will respond.
