Specifically, do they swim against strong currents? Rapids? Occasionally breach the water to jump over obstructions and small waterfalls?

Yes to all. they spend most of their adult lives as sea fish, but when nature calls them to mate and reproduce, they seek out the freshwater stream they were born in, and swim upstream past rapids, even waterfalls and dams. when humans dam a river that salmon use, we often create "water ladders", a type of artificial waterfall for the salmon to get around the obstruction.

During their journey, many salmon are caught be fishermen, by bears and by other predators. The "lucky" ones make it to the headwaters, where they mate, produce millions of fertilized eggs, and die of exhaustion.

They never live to see their young hatch.

Incidentally, the bodies of the deceased are eaten by predators and scavengers, then are spread as manure and serve as a rich fertilizer, contributing to the diversity of forest life in the northwest...
