Can anyone tell me what the the connection is between Rutger Hauer & the lad "Jim" ? i.e. what was the significance of the coins on eyes & how did Jim know R.H. was John Rider?

First of all "The Hitcher" ,is one of the greatest nail biting suspense thrillers ever made! Rutger Hauer {you cant get any better acting from someone who doesn't even have to say a word to scare the heck out of you }!! Hauer's facial expressions convey terror just by looking into those cold steel eyes. He's a serial killer, bored... playing cat and mouse games with C. Thomas Howell . Who makes the mistake of his life by picking up the rain soaked hitch hiker.The coins on the eyes represent a dead man.After killing and framing Jim Halsey for murdering an entire" small western town "the sherriff dep. finds out who he is or is supposed to be and Jim finds out from them after he is arrested for Hauer's crimes.AWESOME MOVIE awesome Rutger.

Rugter Hauer is John Ryder, the maniac, whereas Jim (C. Thomas Howell) is the motorist being stalked.
By the way, do you know Dave Meyers is bringing out a new version of it with Sean Bean next year ?

jim knows his name is john rider because when he first picks him up he asks him his name and he whispers the reply.
