Most male birds don't have a penis. Birds have a cloaca - an opening which is similar in both sexes. The male and the female have to get these in close contact to transfer the sperm.

Some ducks and members of the ostrich family do have a projection which helps, though it is not quite like the mammalian penis.

Many male birds don't have a penis, they breed by rubbing the cloaca's (sphincter type thing at the base of the tail) together, the male ejaculates from the cloaca and the females pumps inwards to take the semen into her body. Some birds do have a penis such as ducks, and if ever you rear ducks and chickens together sometimes the male ducks will mount the hens, this can mean a nasty surprise for the hens because roosters don't have a penis.
