Is a wireless router ALWAYS transmitting electromagnetic waves, or only when a computer is accessing the internet?

(I'm asking because I am concerned about the safety of the radiation, much like cell phones.)

From my own quick search online it seems that WLAN radiation is not as harmful as cell phone radiation. However, that does not mean there is no cause for concern. Cell phone and wireless routers transmit at a frequency that can be damaging to the human body, whereas the infrared signals of a remote control (as one guy mentioned) are harmless. There is still a lot of research that needs to be done. I was a physics grad student, btw.

I know my laptop "goes to sleep" after 5 minutes of no activitity. .. When I move the mouse, it has to find the wireless connection again.... so it's no automatically connected all of the time.

They always send and receive. The frequency and level at which they operate is not hazardous. They are short ranged and easily blocked. Out in the open on a clear day, you may get 80 - 100 yards MAX but the throughput speed decreases as the ranges increase. Inside a home, it can sometimes be hard to pick up the signal on the other end of the house.

Solar radiation should be more of a concern than Wi-Fi or cell phones.

You really have nothing to worry about. The waves used to transmit this information is as harmless as your cordless land line or remote control sending info through the air. Never-the-less, I am sure that you are not the only one in the area with a wireless network, meaning that even if yours is off (and you were still concerned) particular info is transmitting through your space anyway. Leave it on....

Your wireless router is pretty much always emitting em waves however it increases when you are actively using the connection. You shouldn't worry too much about the waves that are emitted having an effect on your health though for it is no more dangerous than the em waves produced by the rotation of the Earth or the radiation that is constantly bombarding us from the sun. Your microwave is actually significantly more dangerous than any computer equiptment.

I would imagine that even if they are constantly transmitting they would not be as dangerous as cell phones because you don't hold them up to your face. They are beyond the range at which the radiation is dangerous.

Those waves have been in the air and space around us since the beginning of time.
