Is this the "sanitization" of war effort that the administration is striving for?

This controversy began after the Vietnam War. It is believed that the images of the caskets containing fallen soldiers is what turned the tide of American opinion against the war. Since Vietnam, presidents have worried that the image of caskets containing fallen soldiers would turn public support against military action.

The current ban on the images of caskets dates back to 1991 and the first gulf war. The Pentagon announced in 1991 that it would no longer allow the media to cover the arrival of caskets containing the remains of fallen soldiers at Dover Airforce Base. However, neither President Bush Sr. nor President Clinton enforced this ban.

Before the current Iraq war, the current administration decided to extend the 1991 Dover ban to all military bases. They also got serious about enforcing the ban. Consequently, Americans are left with only numbers and no images when thinking about the number of men and women who have been killed in Iraq. I think the policy is unfortunate. If we are going to go to war, then we need to be prepared to face the realities of war, and one sad reality of war is death.

Unbelieveable! Why can't the media cover the building of new schools where girls and boys are attending now? Why did't the media cover the restoration of electricity, water and other such stuff? Why didn't the media cover how people have been thankful of the efforts our GI's have made in Iraq? Hmm, maybe it's part of the sanitization effort????

It's very disturbing to see. I think bush is trying to censor it to hide
the Real Horrors of his war.

Its out of respect for the fallen soldier. I wouldn't want my dead body all over the tv screens. Think about the families. How would you feel if reporters were desecrating you funeral.

They can, they just dont want to. Thats because the media is SO conservative, and they dont want to reduce support for Bush's war by showing its realities.

Blame the media, they are so proud to show American military going to Iraq but not shameful enough to show respect and thanks to the returning deads.
