to concentrate on the object in play(baseball, football). by reducing the glare of ones own cheeks. think of yourself driving down a road that is wet with the sun out the glare that is produced

What is your question exactly? If you're asking if you're supposed to put a line under each eye, then yes. The purpose of this is to cut down on glare.

the color black absorbs all light, putting some near your eyes draws it away from your eyes so that you can look near (not AT) the sun (a ball in the air for instance) and still see clearly.
