Plankton are organisms (living individuals). They can be broadly divided into two types--phytoplankton and zooplankton. Phytoplankton are algae, and use phytosynthesis to acquire energy from the sun. Zooplankton are animals, and typically eat algae or bacteria, although some eat other zooplankton. Plankton are found in the open waters of oceans and lakes, and have adaptations that allow them to resist sinking. They form the base of the food chain in many aquatic habitats.
