Im fixing up a crib my great grandpa made for my dad. Its in really good shape its all sanded stained and varnished. The problem is theres one spindle missing in the middle of one of the sides. I was thinking maybe put a metal rod w/ padding around it and weave fabric through the spindles so its covered up and soft. maybe get the bumper type things ive been seeing. As a new mother i really duno if its a good idea or not. if it sounds dangerous for my baby does anyone have any other ideas?

I think you're going to have to retire the family crib, or get it professionally fixed.

You cant use bumper pads after 3 months, babies roll over into them and suffocate themselves.

Besides that, you cannot appreciate the distructive power of an infant until you witness it first hand.

If theres already a spindle missing, or damaged, those little fingers and toes will find a way to distroy the whole of whats left.

Either call in a pro, or get a new crib. Besides that, if you can fit a soda can, bottom first, between the spindles its not safe for a baby.

Since its so old i imagine the spindles are too far apart.

I don't know I think that it might be best to check into a new crib. Older cribs sometimes are not safe to begin with. The spindles may be to far apart. Baby's head could get trapped ect... I know that they can be expensive but, I would check into something new.

I don't know if it's safe, sad to say. Not that you have to make a repair but that it's an older crib... you being a first time mom could gain a lot of help from a visiting nurse- they can help you with safety concerns for baby (they did a safety inspection of my daughter's heirloom cradle), they help you learn about your pregnancy and address any health concerns you may have between dr's visits. This might be a good idea for you. You can ask your dr's office about it but I know your local health department has visiting nurses (my dr's office does too) and it is completely free for you. But I honestly think you either need an inspection done of this crib or to get a new one.

It sounds nice to use a crib that a family member made, but it sounds like it is pretty old. If I were you I try to find a newer crib for your baby. the older crib are just not safe for babies. If you don't have much money look in the newspaper for a used one, many times people sell them and they are in nice condition for a good price.

sounds to me like you need a new crib...I would still keep the one you have as a keep sake to pass down but I don't think I would use it for my baby. If you want a new one try looking on E bay...they have a store on there (right now the name is escaping me) that has beds that start as cribs, change to toddler beds, and finally into a headboard and footboard so that it grows with your baby. This is what I am getting for my nerw addition. CONGRATS!!!

I think I would go out and get a new crib. I'm sure the crib you have is nice, but it just doesn't sound safe being as old as it is.

Very dangerous to use an older crib. There are safety guidlines that are in place now that weren't back then. Go buy your baby a new crib. He/She deserves it .

A crib that old is prolly not up to current safety standards and shouldn't be used.

Make sure you check the width of the slats to make sure the baby can't get its head stuck.
