We have a 2002 Dodge Durango SLT Plus and it recently has had some bad engine problems. The check gauges light went off and the oil level lowered to nothing. Following this, we heard engine clunking and rough driving. We've researched it and it seems that this model has been known to build up engine sludge and it usually leads to total engin failiure. But we heard that if you do some engine flushes and change the oil and filter, that you could save your car. Has anyone else had this problem??

i own a repair shop, and you was told partially right anyway, they do build up some sludge but its caused by people not changing the oil on a regular basis, and it can cause engine failure on one,you can remove the oil pan and clean it out manually and then remove the valve covers on it and clean the heads out before you run the flush chemical through it,and it will do a better job ,sometimes though it may make a few seals start leaking on it if you use the engine flush in it,its your choice of which way to do it,i been at it for 36 yrs,,and i have done it both ways, good luck i hope this help,s.

FYI:
If you hear loud knocking noise when you accelerate, you have worn, or spun a crank bearing. (expensive repair in the thousands)

I doubt that doing an engine fush at this point is going to undo damage that has all ready occured. Especialy as you stated that you ran it out of oil.

verify the top radiator hose, the single that the radiator cap became ingeniously molded into. it is services to leak and can reason the themes which you listed, apart from low oil rigidity.
