Your iguana is testing you to see if you'll stop trying to pick him up. This is very normal. The number one thing not to do is give in to him. Pick him up anyways, show him that you are not intimidated by him. They base everything off of intimidation. The hardest part about owning an iguana is the first year. You have to constantly handle them every day. He will eventually calm down and accept your presence. Also if he tries to bite you, which is common. Just let him bite you, it doesn't hurt first of all, and second, it teaches him that biting is not going to do him any good and he will stop after a couple of months. I did that with mine and he stopped after 2 months and has never even tried since then and he's 4 years old now. trust me, you would rather have a 2 week old bite you that a full grown iguana. Also, constantly sroke it's tail, this will make him comfortable with you touching it and you will most likely never have to deal with being whipped when it gets older. Their personality is based on intimidation, if they know they can get away with it, they will continue to do it. Show no fear when handling them, just do it. They can sense fear and know how to react to it. I noticed people on here saying to wait a year before trying to handle him, this is a big no no, you have to give him no choice, that's the only way to break this habit. I've heard of owners that have been bit and whipped and have had to get stitches. This is probably because they went by the same advice that these people gave you above. I've had mine for 4 years and have never been bit or whipped by him. He does get aggressive during mating season, but nothing like the stories I've heard. Good luck.

Must trust you before you try to hold him. Take it slow by 1) letting him see you often, 2) standing there with the door open and not reaching in. After some time (weeks) reach in but still don't touch him. Again, after some time you should be able to touch him but still don't pick him up. When he trusts you he will give you the chance to pick him up. Seems like it will take forever but it is worth ever iguana kiss mine gave me.

REMEMBER. Your iguana is contaminated with salmonella bacteria. This is not because you aren't looking after it properly, this is a fact of life. Every time you handle your iguana you must wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap to prevent you from getting sick. Do NOT let your iguana near your face. You must also wash every time you touch or clean out your iguana cage. Salmonella causes serious sickness, so be careful!

It takes a while for them to get used to you. To trust you. Show him you are trustworthy and you will have a friend for life. Just be care full I had a friend who had one and it used sit on her shoulder every morning while she put her makeup on. After several years it caught a glimpse of itself while doing this morning routine, and thought there was another one, but it was it's reflection in the mirror. And attacked my friends face ouch! Don't let it be around mirrors.

I got my hubby a iguana I hated it. They look so mean and will whipp you with there tail and they swell up trying to frighting you. They take lots of hands on to get use to you. They are a reptile not a pet so it takes a long time.

most likely, he's not used to you. treat it REAL well and he'll learn to like you and get use to you. give him extra attention and play with it. it's a baby and a lot of babies don't know any better. you can bring it around for it to get used to you. just don't squish it when it runs around!
Good Luck!
