I need this for a science project and have looked everywhere but still cannot find it. I know that coal is formed from swamp ferns that died in the late palezoic era, but it takes millions of years to turn into coal. Please help!

Coal formation started as early as the Proterozoic and continues today in swamps such as the Okefenokee swamp in southern Georgia. Check out the link below.
