Depends on the brand and the type...you can go to Wal-Mart and get plain ol' tires and it will only cost you $256. Or you can go to Wal-Mart and get name-brand LT (light truck) tires, and it can cost you up $700+.
I think if you were quoted $600 for LT tires, including balancing, mounting, and tax, (and check for road hazard) you are getting a good deal.
We usually get tires for our truck and SUV at Sam's Club or Discount Tire. Last time I bought 4 new LT tires it cost me about $900.

RE:
How much should 4 new tires-installed-cost for a Ford Explorer?
It seems like $600 was way to much.

there is a huge variety in tires. i would say a good street tire should run about $100 per tire, all season maybe up to 150, and a cheapy tire for 60 (there is nothing wrong with that, i prefer cheapies in certain circumstances). if you arent worried about great traction in the rain or snow, a normal name brand street tire would probably be your best bet. they will last the longest. if you plan on selling your vehicle within 2 or 3 years, and not carrying any heavy loads, such as towing, or hauling plates of steel in the back, i would go with the cheapest. i ran the 4/$100 on my toyota truck for years. it was an old beater, so paying $100 (no balancing, valve stem, or warrenty) every 2-3 years was the way to go.

You may only have to buy 3 tires. The full size spare in your truck can be used as one of the tires so that will save you from buying 4. 3 used about $75-100,3 new $250-350. Good luck.

I have a ford explorer, its a 1997 and I take it to wal-mart and have them put on the tires that cost 59 dollars each, they charge 5 dollars each to put the tires on and then the balance them. They also do a free rotation and balance every year. so that comes to about 256.00 dollars.

My tires (Chevy 3/4 ton) cost $100-130 each depending on brand and if they on sale. So, that $400-520 without tax, mounting and balance. These just good all-terrain truck tires and nothing fancy.
