Are you talking like when you go to jail yourself, or when you're visiting an inmate? When you go yourself take what you want, but they'll take it from you and you won't be able to get it back until you're released. If you're visiting then call the jail and ask - every jail has different rules, but for the most part you can't really take anything with you.

I had to go pick up someone's belongings once and take them to his home. They didn't allow you to have anything from the start, I mean not even a wedding band (it's considered contraband). Once a week a person can bring you washed underwear and socks and then they take a bag of the dirty ones home for next week's visit.

Can: the clothes on your back and a holy bible

Can't: hookers, booze, drugs, butt plugs, novelty soap, porn, gels or liquids of any kind, and cakes with files backed into them.
