My old motherboard isn't working and I'm unsure whether I should just get a new computer or get a new motherboard. I don't know if my processor is working.

depends on what kind of motherboard you HAD and which you are going to buy. You can get a decent to pretty good motherboard for casual or daily use for less than $100... in fact.. probably less than $75. Now, the question about the processor (aka CPU). If you want to stick with the same type of processor or the same chip you had before, NO. Just buy a motherboard that accepts your CPU's socket or slot config. I'm assuming your asking about the same computer from your previous question. You have a Pentium 4 CPU right? If so, you need a motherboard that accepts a SOCKET 775 cpu. The cool thing about practically all of Intel's chips follow the 775 config. Notice how i said practically all... all the P4's, PD's, and Core Duo 2's follow this configuration. What speed you want is up to you. If you were happy with your old one, go ahead and keep the old one. If you want a faster or newer one, buy a new one with the motherboard. A lot of stores like www.Tigerdirect.com sell motherboard/cpu bundles. Some even have CPU/Motherboard/Video Card bundles. If you want to try out the AMD CPU's, you need to a motherboard that has the AMD configuration. With AMD, however, you need to be sure you buy the correct CPU/motherboard compatability. The CPU is actually a pretty easy replacement. If you are going to a store to purchase the parts, take the old CPU with you. Sometimes, the stores have open boards to test old components. If you are ordering online..... well..... you have to wait and see if you are only buying the motherboard. If you want a pretty good bundle with good motherboard and good CPU,... you can expect to pay from 180-300. These boards usually come with built in video cards (not gaming cards) and ethernet/phone slots. If you want, go ahead and contact me and i can give you some advice or any info you might need. Hope this helped.

If you are quite sure that only the motherboard is faulty, then you could probably save a great deal by just replacing it. I'd want to know what caused it to break down in the first place. There is often a chain of bad components which can cause the failure and that may mean that the same thing would happen to a new motherboard.

I'd suggest a bench test of each component separately (power supply, motherboard, processor, RAM and cards) by a reliable expert before you put money into it. It would be best, in any case, to have the processor fitted professionally. So much depends on an efficient heat sink and just an imperfect application of the cement can lead to all sorts of problems!

If a new motherboard really would solve the problem, I would consider a new processor as well (and as much RAM as you can afford, too). Then you would virtually have a new computer!

It sounds like you are not really sure what the problem is. So if i were you i would take it to a computer shop and let them find out what is wrong and go from there. If the motherboard is bad you have 2 options basically buy a new motherboard which will probably mean a new video card, CPU, memory, and motherboard or a new motherboard that is compatible with your processor.

i think of you need to attend a on a similar time as. Your modern setup will nevertheless play new video games fairly nicely. i for my section went from a 775 setup to a sparkling 1155 socket board and i5 processor for 4 hundred dollars. i will enable you to already know the value distinction is hardly important. the terrific element you need to in all probability do is take the money you have and get a effective sturdy Statechronic.

well. most people confuse abt it. just buy a new (same type is prefered) motherboard if u r sure that only motherboard is not working. it is enough. then plug old processor to new motherboard. it must work if only mb is out of order. if you r not satisfied with your comp speed . you have to buy both (mb and processor)

wel!!!! if you want a new mb, decide on the platform first!!! AMD or intel. if u ask me Go AMD!! actually now is the rite time 2 buy a new processor! b'coz intel's got conroe a.k.a. Core 2 Duo, but AMD is soon comin out with the K8L architecture which is said 2 be 64% faster than Conroe, so my advice is wait until Jan 2007

Unless you want the same speed as your old motherboard, you probably want a new processor.

Recomendation - Get a new PC or build your own.
