i own a repair shop, and there probably going to find either a blockage in ther heater core or a bad coolant valve on it ,this is what allows he coolant in to the heater core, since it didnt over heat it may also have a bad sending unit on it,these are some of the things they might tell you that it will be,and very possibly they may tell you it might need a new water pump on It,,the fins that actually help pump the water can be worn out on It,but the pump its self will never leak a drop of coolant,id expect to hear at least one or two of these things, good luck i hope its a simple repair.

if it didnt actually get hot (steam comming out of your overflow) it was not the thermostat. i once had a temperature sensor go bad, i would start my truck, and within 2 minutes the gauge would read that it is overheating. parts can range quite a bit in price (i paid near $30 for an86 toyota) and labor can vary quite a bit based on where it is located (mine was easy and i did it myself in about 30 minutes). i take back what i said about it not being the thermostat. if since this happened, your heat in the van does not work, then the thermostat might be rusted closed. this means that the coolant wont circulate through the heater core or the radiator. if you shut it off before it got too hot, steam might not have come out. does the guage move quickly or gradual? with the temp sensor, mine moved faster than my tachometer. ok, this answer is too long. here is what i would do. replace the thermostat, its quick and cheap (maybe $30, including labor, less than 10 if you do it yourself). then try the sensor...pay attention to what your gauge does and how fast it does it between now and then. also, its likely that its your thermostat if you have let it get low recently...it is at the top of the engine, and air in the system will allow it to rust, either open or closed.

wow ...do you live in a very cold climate? if so then maybe your cooling system is too efficient... do you ever notice big trucks on the highway that have plastic covers that cover the grill partially... usually they are split in the middle and the corners are folded back so some air can get through, this is so their engines will get warmer and they will have heat, also it is bad for a engine to be too cold while running... you need to cut a piece of cardboard that is slightly smaller than your radiator and tape it to the front so it will restrict some of the air that is going through it... this will let your engine get warmer and allow you to have heat... watch the temperature gauge or light closely to make sure you don't overheat ... if you do then simply cut some of the cardboard off till you get the right size !

Check the radiator It has to be low on water. Do this only when it has cooled off for atleast 3 hours. If you open the radiator cap before it is completely cool, you could get burned by the hot water.
It can also have a container on the side of the car, that holds water. Please be shure it is full of water.

Check the thermostat under the hood. Or the heater coil. Either may cause your car to register too hot.

First, check you coolant antifreeze level. I would almost guarante there is not enought of it in the cooling system. And second change the thermostat, very cheap to repair.

somehow you could have a airpocket in your engine and have to crack a line and get the air out check to see if when hot if your radiator is hot if not its your thermostat it overheated when you were driving not sitting if it was only while sitting idleing your coolant fan probably wasnt coming on iam not seeing any problems over $100.00
