Saudi Arabia being an oil rich country has become a leader in oil sales because the rest of the world needs it so badly. This basically means they almost have a monopoly on this. Its not a commodity since its been around and other countries do have oil ,but it still makes them a leader in the oil world. Look into what kind of prospective economical growth Saudi Arabia has as compared with what they would've had if they had no oil.

has great effect on religious industry(second industry now in Saudi). billions $$ spent through decades in the religious industry and it is booming now and almost parallel with oil industry. Saudi planing to accommodate 20 millions visitors to mecca in Hajj season in the future.
the most expensive square foot of land in the world is in Mecca (around the Holy Mosques), The Saudi monarch has the title of "the custodian of the tow holy Mosques" it is the highest title in Islamic world.
