My son will be 3 weeks old tomorrow. We have his circumcision scheduled for 11:00 in the morning. I have tried to get it done earlier, but his doc insists that this is ok. Does it hurt him more now than it would have if it were done sooner?

1.) DEMAND the doctor use anesthesia. (They should give him a local anesthetic, to numb it.) Many doctors skip this step, feeling that because the boy can't say, "Hey! That HURTS!" they don't feel pain. ("They're crying because they don't want to be restrained, not because it hurts. They can't feel pain.")

It's a very old teaching that has been proven wrong, but some docs still follow it. Insist yours give your son a local.

2.) Discuss with the doc whether you should give him some Tylenol about an hour before the procedure. (He'll tell you how much is appropriate for his weight.)

3.) If you're nursing, BREASTFEED! Before, after,... I'd say during if you could get him to. Breastmilk contains endorphins, which help relieve pain. If you're not nursing, have a pacifier ready. (Sucking is a soothing thing. He may take a pacifier now for comfort even if he usually rejects them.)

4.) Hold him. Nothing comforts him like the presence of you -- your smell, your touch.

And please note: You don't have to go through with the procedure (unless you're doing it for religous reasons). It's perfectly OK NOT to circumcise your son. (Only about 50% of the current generation of babies are circumcised.)

Routine circumcision of baby boys for no reason is CHILD ABUSE. You are a BAD mother or you would have investigated what the implications of circumcision would mean on the future of your son's health, happiness and sex life rather than commit to teh practice because 'his dady is like that' or whatever. It is a horrific and barbaric practice.

So, my words seem kinda tough on you? They're true. Deal with it. And don't circumcise any more of your sons.

Why would you want to chop off the tip of your sons penis? Did you know that Circumcision was started by the church to stop young boys from Masturbating? Just teach your boy to clean his Pee Pee, then you need no Clip Clip! It's a shame that in this society we are so judgmental about the look and shape or human bodies that we would hack off a part of it to fit in! Circumcision is nothing short of the horrible things that are done to woman's genitalia in Africa.

Quote:Routine Infant Circumcision [RIC] is not practiced in most medically advanced nations. Unlike American parents, few parents worldwide are actually faced with this choice. Their babies are automatically brought home intact. 82% of the world’s living men are intact. Few people are aware of the fact that circumcision was introduced to our culture in an attempt to eliminate masturbation.

There will be discomfort but I assure you he won't remember a thing. It's far more traumatic for the parents than it is for the baby.
He'll be fine and they will prescribe something for the few days it will be needed. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions, so do so. Write down your concerns and questions so you don't forget. . Comfort him just as you do for anything else. Waiting three week really does'nt make a difference, no need for guilt feelings. Be happy!! Celebrate the birth IT"S A BOY

Hun, This is not an easy thing to go through. For baby's and you. I think that it is better to do it and get it overwith in the first five weeks of life. It won't neccesarily hurt any less or worse for him, all babys feelings are different. I have had two boys and three girls, and now expecting my sixth in december, a boy. For my first son, we did it at two weeks and my second at four weeks, so you are right in beetween. I felt it was too earlie for my fist, and to late for my second. Good luck!!

Don't worry! Your baby will soon forget about the pain. Just make sure that you use free diapers and wipes with Vitamin E or Aloe Vera, so he won't suffer from rashes or skin irritation. You may also learn more from this site http://www.upkb.com/diapers.php

It has been researched to find that sugar (in sm quantities) released the same endorphanes on infants as pain medication. We have asm cup of basically sugar water that we dip pacifiears in prior to painful procedures.
