An era in US History started in the 1960s by Joe McCarthy. To prevent himself from being accused of being a Communist, he blamed other members of the US Government as being communists. "The Crucible" was based on this and the Salem witch trials (same concept).

McCarthyism is the term describing a period of intense anti-Communist suspicion in the United States that lasted roughly from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. The term derives from U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, a Republican of Wisconsin. The period of McCarthyism is also referred to as the Second Red Scare, and coincided with increased fears of Communist influence on American institutions, espionage by Soviet agents, heightened tension from the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, the success of the Chinese Communist revolution (1949) and the Korean War (1950-1953).

McCarthyism is in reference to Joseph McCarthy, he was a senator from Wisconsin. It had to do with the Anti-Communist feelings that arrised in in the late 1940's and lasted till the late 50's. During this time, people whom were in the public eye (gov't officals, teachers and actors/actresses) were often accused of being comunist. It often destroyed their careers and/or lives. There was often qestionable evidence or none at all to hold them accountable with. It was named after Senator Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin back in the 50's. He led an attack of trying to ferret communists out of the entertainment, business and political worlds. Although no one was put in a concentration camp, many people were banned from working in their chosen careers because McCarthy's goon squad had unjustly labeled them Communists.
