Take a string, tie it to a tree, and explore as far as the string goes to see if I can find a way out. But seriously, if you are really lost, you should find a clearing and stay put. Try to make your clearing distinctive so search helicopters can see you -- a fire, or bright clothing on a flag.
If you decide you are better off looking for help, break a trail and really make it look like someone has been through the place.
I guess the best solution is not to get lost in the first place (-:.

Climb the tallest tree around to look in all directions for a road or a town. Take a bearing off the suns' position and walk to where I need to go to get out of the forest.
For real... the safest thing to do is stay put, start a small fire and produce as much smoke as you can to help others find YOU. Stay calm and don't panic. Think shelter, water, food.

If I thought someone would be looking for me I would pick a comfortable spot and stay put.
If I thought someone would look for me but it would take a few days, I would find water and build a fire and stay put. (Very few people can make a fire without matches. I have done it, and I would still not give myself good odds. Have to try though. Just sitting around anyway.)
If I did not think someone would be looking for me I would walk downhill until I found a stream, follow the stream to a river, follow the river to a town. If the stream goes through a swamp it gets harder, but it's still the best bet. At least you have water and food while you wander. (Don't be too particular about the food.)

I would keep going till I came to a children's playground. Find a see-saw. Take the saw. Cut down the trees for wood. Then I wood see my way out.

I would stay put. Chances are that if you don't know where you are, you won't know your way back. Most people just move further away from their last known location which makes them more difficult to find. Don't panic, search crews will find you.

i would fallow my foot prints or walk tords the sun until i found my way out or Walk tords the mos on the rocks and i would eventually find a road or a trail or something
