she is the only rat i have, and while she is nursing her babies which are about 3-4 weeks old she is giving birth right now i had bought her pregnant and she is the only rat i own how is this possible?

I just wanted to correct the post above mine, rats can mate from 5 weeks old, not a few months. You need to remove the boys from the group at that age otherwise you will have a lot of pregnant girls(and mum). It does sound like she held onto some sperm. For some reason rats can do that, they can delay the actual getting pregnant.

It is possible that when your rat got pregnant the first time, she carried some of that unused semen around in her. A rats gestation period is 3 weeks, and they go into heat immediately after having babies. SO its possible that she had her babies and got pregnant again from the old semen. The 3 week old babies could not have gotten her pregnant because rats don't reach sexual maturity til they are at least a few months old. I know because i raise rats for my snake.
