why not a betta? they're one of the easiest to take care of.

maybe you can get one of the betta's cousin like a dwarf gourami.
they come in orange with blue stripes, or all orange, or all blue. they're actually pretty cute but is pretty shy and skittish.

or another cousin, a paradise fish. They're tough as nails.. and aggressive too.. they should be kept by themselves... If you're lucky, you can find a really colorful one.

Angel fish and Gouramies are my favorite. They come in many colors and move gracefullythough the tank. Not too hard to care for. I had a few yellow angels before i upgraded to a salt water tank. Whatever you do dont put any little snails into your tank, they multiply on their own and never go away. If you develop an algae problem, get a plecko they will take care of it in no time!
Ciclids are the most brightly colored fish in all of freshwater but if you decide to go with them, you can only have Ciclids. They are very aggressive and will eat anything that isn't a Ciclid. You should feed them feeder fish to keep them happy. I know that they are interesting and are considered low maintenance but i could never get over seeing them eat outer live fish.
Good luck. Hope this helps

Guppies aren't too bad if you get all males, 1 gallon per fish, and you would have to change the water (10-20% weekly or biweekly) There are many colors availiable. Another good fish is the danios (zebra, look up red zebra ones, they can glow under blacklight and are very hardy)
