I find truely happy people are very accepting of their lives - the good and the bad. This can be through religion or education or just environment (upbringing). Through one of the vehicles above, they 'learn' that the world is not perfect and good and wonderful and that there is good with bad. They don't look at life through rosy colored glasses - they accept life full on and live it.
Then again I think some very happy people are a bit unaware of what could be, or what could happen, or what was NOT accomplished. They just live day be day and make the best of their circumstances. They make their circumstances happy ones. They find the good in everything.
I agree that some people who are very very happy seem to be trying to convince others AND themselves that they are happy. They may actually be depressed. Those people are very obvious. Some know it (that they are depressed) and some don't. Some need help, some are trying to help themselves.
So, your answer is not a black and white easy answer for me - but you have my opinion for all its worth.

This is often the case. People become very adept at hiding their feelings. They fear rejection and the lack of understanding they often get from friends and family when they try to talk about their unhappiness. This has been part of the human condition for a long time, it's recorded in songs and even in the Bible. It's a real slap in the face when you tell people how bad things are and they repeat platitudes like "something will come along" when you've lost your job or "God will provide" when you're broke and about to be evicted from your apartment. So people put on a happy face and just try to cope. How many times have you heard of a happy, jovial person that left work on Friday afternoon and was found dead on Monday morning from suicide. A sad fact of life.

I think c g is so happy.... so happy he has to depress my lovely time here on yahoo answers.
however... I think the people that are truely depressed do show signs of it. Sometimes people only noticed after it's too late... but usually someone close can tell they are depressed.
But to the outside world and to unsuspecting individuals that person seems quite happy.

Yes, this is true for people with bipolar mood disorder, previously called "manic-depression." The manic "highs" are incredible and scary, but the "lows" are so horrible, and devasting. I would not wish this on anyone. I have lived with it for all my life.

Not all of 'em.
I'm happy all the time. Mostly because I had a depressing past and don't want it repeated.
