I have a little koi fish that was going to turn 1 year old in November, but, for an currently unknown reason, he's bobbing around on his side and can't set himself right (I think there's some kind of parasite in my fish tank). I know he's dying because my other koi experienced the same exact symptoms right before he died, yet it took him about 5 days to finally die.
I don't want my fish to suffer for that long, so I want to put him out of his misery now. My first thought was to leave him out on a plate to suffocate, but I was afraid that would be even more agonizing for him. I want to bury him, so toilet flushing is not an option.
Please, does anyone have any other suggestions for putting a fish to sleep?

Fish in bowl of water placed in freezer is the best quickest way...Koi hibernate in the winter...so he will kick in to hibernate mode...and the be frozen and never wake up...
You could try saving him by doing 100% water changes everyday...make sure you always put him in water that is warmer than the water he is in when you do the change...make sure to add a little aquarium salt each time.

Quickly? Cut off it's head. Sounds really mean and believe me I wouldn't be able to do it. I'm the kind of person who would rush the poor thing to a vet. Due to the nerves, it will keep moving a bit, but there would be no pain if you do it really quickly.

Or you could try to treat the fish. Go to the petstore and purchase some Melafix for bacterial infections or check with the clerk at the store if it may be something else.

It is kind of you to want to end his life painlessly. The best way would be to put him in a nice sized bowl of water and stick him in the freezer. He will keep swimming around and finally loose consciousness due to the cold and die. Then you can give him a proper funeral.

If someone was taking care of you and you had bad symptoms, couldnt communicate and was in pain, would you want that person to find a way to kill you ?? I know your comming from the heart but really......your fish is a living breathing thing and you should find a way to save him. I have a betta and I would never try to put him down.

Try placing him in a separate container to quarantine him from your other fish. Look up information online about SWIM BLADDER disorder. Aquariumfish.net is a wonderful resource.

I agree with the people who say to cut off the head. There isn't much pain because the chopping of the body will destory the spine (if the fish has one) so the pain is gone.

2 choices. One - put your fish in a small bowl with just enough water to cover him. Add alka-seltzer or bicarbonate of soda to the bowl. This will displace the oxygen and they die very quickly.

Two - put your fish (without water) into a plastic bag and pop him in the freezer. The cold apparently anesthetizes them and they die quite quickly.
