The colonists traded rum and mollasses with africa in exchange for slaves it was called the triangle trade.August of 1619 when a ship carrying slaves from Africa docked in Jamestown, Virginia. Prior to that date there were no slaves held by Europeans in what is now the USA, although many Indian tribes enslaved captives from rival tribes. Economic conditions in the southern colonies encouraged the use of slaves. The practice spread to the north, particularly New York and Connecticut. It was less in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, two colonies established for religious reasons, and which for just such reasons opposed slavery. New York abolished slavery in 1827.

The original Africans brought to Jamestown were not slaves, but indentured servants (a legal contract lasting seven years). By the time they had served their indenture, they could speak English and understood most of the customs and they were released at the end of their indenture. The reason it changed was due partly to a problem with a recent arrival from a later ship. He kept escaping. A judge ruled that he had caused so much trouble, his indenture had to be extended to cover his whole life. He was the first slave. His owner, by the way, was a free African. The planters were aware after one generation that freeing those who had served their indenture let them compete with them. They also had to keep replacing them. Slavery eliminated the competition and the supply problem. In the New England states, indentures were accepted and used, but slavery was not.

In 1619, the first African slaves arrived at Jamestown. Starting from day 1 at Jamestown in 1607, indentured servants were used up until the early 1700s, when slaves began to be shipped in huge amounts to America in the Middle Passage, which was the second leg of the triangular trade route in which slaves were brought over in. The southern colonies needed cheap labor and used more slaves than the middle or New England colonies. Hope this helps.

The Dutch were the first to bring slavery to America. Find out more about your nation's history by reading "Don't Know Much About...American History" by Kenneth C. Davis
The "don't know much about..." series are the most informative and interesting works in the non-fiction world. History kicks ***, slavery not so much.

Slavery began with the Native Americans, who enslaved conquered tribesmen. The europeans brought over the idea that if you can own a non-christian, you have the right to. This later moved on to the triangle trade in which christian black people were traded as slaves. As you know, this continued until the end of the Civil War.

i have been taught that many things like your question are not known about slavery, but I was told that traders bought slaves from African tribes which had slaves themselves and were selling their slaves, but some people that were buying slaves got greedy and decided instead of paying for people that were already slaves they started just taking many Africans into slavery and stripping them of freedom and of African names
