Can I use a 850 watt external tank engine heater with a chevy 350 engine, calls for a 1500 watt?

Its on a 83 gmc pickup, old heater isn't working and I am looking to get a new one. Will it make much of a difference if I use the smaller watt heater?

shure just plug it in when its warm it will keep it warm
