It definitely should be socially acceptable. If I liked a guy and knew he was single I would definitely ask him out. Both guys and girls are shy and I think both have equal opportunities to ask another person out on a date. If a girl really cares that much about what other people think of her because she took the initiative to ask a guy out on a date then she has some insecurity issues that need to resolved...

I think it should be totally acceptable for the girl to initiate the date. It's hard for guys to to make the first move and they are often unsure of how the girl feels so I say if you like him go for it.

why not! this is 2006. women have come a long way from bring helpless little things that just sit in the corner. It should totally be acceptable in this day and age.
Besides, sometimes, the guy is so darn shy if she sits around and waits for him to ask it will never happen

I think it already is. I think it's very important for the woman to do what she wants and not wait around for a man to ask. If we all did that most of us would be single or with a guy we really didn't want.

It's fine to ask him to go somewhere with you. As for asking him to be your boyfriend, it may be acceptable but not the greatest idea. If he's not full of enthusiasm enough to ask you, it doesn't bode that well for the relationship. Usually.

absolutely, otherwise, girls will obsess about boys for MONTHS and then wait and wait and wait for the boy to ask her out, but he never does because he doesn't think she likes him, so she thinks that there's something wrong with her, when really they're both just shy

It's acceptable, but our initial impression will be that you are easy. You will have to work to prove you are not. Unless you are that is. I know I sound like a pig, but that's just the way it is.
