Boredom is a MAJOR factor. This summer, some kids cut the top on my brother's convertible with a very sharp knife. A month before that incident, they removed my mailbox (a Federal offense) and attempted to shatter my tempered-glass screen door. Failing that, they took my recycle bin and tried to break my car's rear window. The homeless guys/ladies that walk through my neighborhood don't bother a soul.

It's a way of venting out respressed feelings., that one cannot normally express in legitimate channels or via the expensive media.

They want to express their repressed feelings, most probably those negative ones that they cannot express in decent circumstances.
