I'm mainly asking this b/c I'm considering fighting a recent speeding ticket. All 4 tires are over 40K in mileage, but the rear ones are worse- they are balding. The reading I got for the rear tires was 23. The front was over 30. Is this in itself bad? Could my tires really blow out, especially if I were speeding? Thanks!

PS... the door jamb says recommended pressure is 29 for all tires.

Would the variation of my rear tires being 23 vs my front tires being 31 (recommended is 29) at ALL affect my speedometer?? I drive an '02 Rav4... trying to prove I wasn't going 50 in a 35.

the air pressure in your tires wont affect the speedo but not having the right size tires will

I don't know how the tire pressure or a lack of tread can get you out of a speeding ticket. Better to ask when the radar unit was last calibrated.

Look at the side sticker on or around the driver's side door. It will tell you the proper air pressure for front and back tires. By my guess, your air pressure is okay. Usually the rear tires in a front wheel drive cars are lower than the front tires.

Are your tires steel belted? Just because the tire is bald, doesn't mean it will blow. Usually only if the steel belts break.. you see a bulge on the side of the tire, then it is very possible to blow.

The main problem you see with bald tires is a lack of control on snow and rainy streets. Driving 75 to 100 mph plus could result in a blow out. It has more to do with the rating of your tire, A, B, C or D...

Is this the excuse the police officer gave for giving you a ticket? They give tickets to make money for the county. His reasoning isn't actionable. Police are not experts in vehicles.

Inflate them all to 35 pounds and get some new tires as soon as possible. Better safe than sorry. I don't recommend getting cheap tires. They wear out quickly.

different tire press could cause your speedometer to be off a few miles an hour as far as the back tires yes i would be worried about them blowing out if they are very bad
