I was told that loud pipes save lives on a bike. I own a 2005 zx10r and can't afford a nice exhaust right now. It has a muzzy pipe on it now, (which is ok) but the one I really want cost about $1000.00. Can I not use a muffler at all and if so, will this take away from its performance?

You will lose power, altering the exhaust system will make the engine run leaner which is not good for it and as bill b said it don't save lives it's just an excuse for having them that loud, the only way a loud pipe could possibly help would be if it exited out the front like where the horn is located and I don't think that would even help much. Besides that why would you want alter such an awesome motorcycle? You shouldn't mess with success...Just enjoy it the way it is and you will save a lot of money...If you are afraid someone might pull out in front of you...You should be because they will regardless of how much noise your making. The best thing to do is imagine you are totally invisible and totally silent and other drivers can't see or hear you at all...

Whoever told you that loud pipes save lives was A COMPLETE IDIOT! Loud pipes piss off neighbors, let the cops know you're coming, drain your wallet and still can't be heard over that tuner car's 140dB stereo as he pulls in front of you.

"Loud Pipes Save Lives" is COMPLETE HORSE $HIT!

You must use a muffler of some type on the streets as almost every city I know of has a noise ordinance. One complaint by the neighbors and you get a ticket, and if it continues they impound your bike.

Performance wise your mufffler has been tuned to your bike's engine to give the proper amount of back pressure. If you don't understand that, then don't screw with your exhaust.

If performance is what you want, try to comprehend that fast motorcycles are fast in the corners, not just in a straight line. Anyone can twist a throttle, and it doesn't make you a good rider, it makes you a squid.

Loud pipes can save lives, however, turn it down when in town. First you need to learn the lingo. Bikes have silencers, cans or pipes. Cars and lawn mowers have mufflers.

I would bet you are better off with an affordable slip on from Yoshimara, Sato, etc... It will keep the fuzz from hassling you. A ZX10 is a nice machine.

Loud pipes don't really save lives. I prefer my bike quiet for a few reasons. Your loud pipe will drown out a lot of other sounds that might be important to hear. Even at highway speed with a good helmet wind noise will be reduced enough such that you can hear a lot more like sirens, other cars moving behind or along side, or animals waiting in ambush on the side of the road. The drone of a loud pipe will add a lot to psychlogical fatigue on long rides. And your loud/no pipe will almost certainly require the motor to be retuned and my bike, a '99 Triumph Sprint, runs really well just like it is.

It has not in any way been shown that loud pipes save lives. If someone is going to run into you by the time they hear you it would be to late anyway. All loud pipes really do is startle people(which could cause an accident) and annoy people. Some of these same people that tell me loud pipes save lives have no problem riding in shorts. tee shirts, tennis shoes and no helmet.
Also, changing pipes just to make them louder often can be detrimental to the engine.

If you use no muffler at all, you will achieve the following results:

1. Less power
2. Possible engine damage
3. Pissing off anyone within earshot
4. Proving beyond all doubt that you're a squid

Loud pipes don't save lives. Riders who ride like they have a brain save lives. If you're truly concerned about safety, spend the $1000 on a track school or good safety gear.

LOUD PIPES dont save lives. they make a lot of noise and p**s people off, me included. It may run lean and burn out exhaust valves as fuel injection mapping isnt designed to run without muffler. MUZZY can will be stretching its limits . Do you have a Power Commander fitted to richen mixture?
If you want to be noticed, wear a clown suit

I'm pretty sure you have to have a pipe, but I recommend checking with the DOT in your state to be sure.

And as everyone else said, don't worry about the loud pipes thing. The situations where they may actually contribute to accident avoidance are rather specific, and no guarantee anyway.

Loud pipes really don't save lives.people just use it as an excuse.I have straight drag pipes on both my Harleys,I don't use any excuse for it,I just like them that way.Paying close attention to what everyone around you is doing is the best way of saving lives.
