Retarded timing: If the ignition timing on a car is retarded, then less power is made because the air/fuel mixture doesn't completely combust during the compression/combustion cycle. The flame front completely combusts after the piston has started its power stroke. This results in a loss of power.
Retarded timing often leads to louder exhaust noise, and overheating, especially the exhaust valve

first of all why dont u give specifics of why u want to retard timing r u using nitrous oxide r u just trying to tune the engine or r u adding forced induction give us an update why as soon as u can. but retard the timing means u back the timing off so the spark occurs AFTER TOP DEAD CENTER instead of before top dead center u dont want to do that unless u have a spark knock or u are using a power adder. please email me and let me know what ur doing if ur using nitrous for every one 50 shot u retard timing 2 degrees so if u have a 150 shot of nitrous u retard timing 6 degrees from factory so if factory is 10 ur total non advanced timing will be 4 degrees for forced induction engines its a little more complicated than that hope this helps

It means usually to turn the distributor a little in teh same direction as the shaft rotates, to cause the spark to occur later in the cycle. Later equals retarded and earlier equals advanced.
If the vehicle has electronic fuel injection, don't even try this, as the computer will still do its best to overcome the changed timing.

Turn the distributor in the direction of rotation slows the motor down. Retarding the timing is taking away advance. Most time engines use advanced before top dead center "spark before the piston gets to top" This is done to speed the burning of fuel thus more heating of air. Engines use heated air expansion to push the piston down. Ever notice how much more power the engine makes when the air temp is cold?

i own a repair shop, and been at this for a while,if you retard the timing your delaying it a little more than it already is,this will make it have a little bit less horse power or take off,it all depends on where it was to start with though for this to have a big effect on it but all you,ll be doing is taking it down a little ,instead of up which is advancing it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

LOL the tech got it backwards. Retarding spark is delaying it. He described advancing the spark.

Rotate the distributor so that the spark event happens later, or closer to Top Dead Center.

it means pushing the spark back farther before TDC so the spark occurs earlier before the piston reachesTDC
