Try John Irving..he's my favorite author. He wrote The Hotel New Hampshire and The Cider House Rules, but my favorites of his are A Prayer for Owen Meany (which was made into a movie called Simon Birch) and his newest, which I read this summer called Until I Find You.. his books are usually long, quite detailed and can be difficult to get into at first, but everything mentioned becomes part of the story. His books are always quirky, off-the-wall and like nothing else out there. I love reading anything he's written.
