Step 1: Get rid of the brackets

Step 2: Collect like terms on each side

Step 3: Simplify

1) 8y - 4 + 3y + 21 = 6y - 3y + 9

2) 8y + 3y - 6y + 3y = 9 + 4 - 21

3) 8y = -8 so y = -1

8y-4+3(y+7)=6y-3(y-3)
8y - 4 + 3y + 21 = 6y - 3y + 9 {remove parentheses}
11y + 17 = 3y + 9 {collect like terms on each side}
8y = - 8 {subtract 3y & 17 from both sides}
y = - 1 {divide both sides by 8}

check

8(-1) - 4 + 3(-1 + 7) = 6(-1) - 3(-1 - 3)
-8 - 4 - 3 + 21 = - 6 + 3 + 9
6 = 6

8y - 4 + 3 (y + 7) = 6y - 3 (y -3)
8y - 4 + 3y + 21 = 6y - 3y + 9
11y - 4 = 3y + 9
(subtract 3y from each side)
8y - 4 = 9
(add 4 to each side)
8y = 13
(divide by 8 on each side)
y = 13/8
