I mean, Teddy Geiger is a very talented singer songwriter, but I know so many girls at school who like him just cuz they think he's cute. So instead of being seen as a talented star, he is seen as a sex symbol and hearthrob. How gross! And when Michelle Branch said on her interview that she wasn't going to compromise, I knew she was going to go through some rough patches. She was bigger than Rihanna just three years ago, but now, people ask me: who is she? She simply didn't get as much recognition as a person who would have gone all bad-girlish. And Jewel is one of those celebs who want to have a love life instead of pose all sexy on coke ads, but that doesn't mean we should remember her only as some Alaskan folkie. I mean she's beautiful, and really good! Anyone agree?

Nowadays, the "mold" is frowned upon by me. I don't mind that back in the 60s and 70s, they smiled and posed for the picture. It wasn't overtly sexual to gain consumers' attention. Now, you see people buying albums just because the artist appeals in a "sexual" way. By sexual, I mean that the consumers find the artist to be appealing. Back then, people didn't do that. That just wasn't the way things were. If you look at lots of soft 70s pop album covers, you don't see things you see nowadays. I mean, Carole King's "Tapestry" (1971) won her four grammys and stayed on the Billboard charts for 6 years. Her album cover isn't sexual. She's just on her bed with her cat sitting next to a window. That's the way the media should be. Not giving kids ideas about pimps, prostitutes and sex. The artist may suck (like most rappers do), but because they show a gangsta side or a sexual side of him/her, people buy it. I agree with you Derek. I'm pissed off at the media, and have been for quite some time now.

I'm completely with you. And I'm actually a little sick about Teddy Geiger. He could be so great, but he's been completely marketed to the 12-18 female demographic. I mean, come on! Seventeen magazine? He was completely positioned as the "really talented -- but really young -- cute boy." Why did the "young" and "cute" part even need to be included?

I'm giving you props for having the guts to admit that he's good, because most guys would just refuse to listen to him. Another good example of an artist who's refused to play the game is Jason Mraz. He even wrote his song "Wordplay" about trying to do what the record label was forcing him to do while trying to stay true to himself, and failing the "true to himself" part.

And the record labels can't figure out why sales keep going down!!

I think it makes sense to blame the record companies - but then again what about the consumers? The reason that record companies are shoveling this crap at us is because the majority of the public eats it up!! What we need is more people like you and others who appreciate quality to continue to support artists who are individuals - not ones that make music for the sole purpose of watching girls shake their asses. Granted, some of that music is kickin, but it's not hard to sense the intention is it is a dishonest one. Check out Erykah Badu's MySpace page - she has (hope its still there) a preview for a documentary called "Before The Music Dies" and it is about that exact subject.

Yes I do, but unfortunately it's hard to not play along.
The record labels are the ones with all the connections and the money.
They think they know what the public want so individualism goes out the door.

I really hate it when extremely talented people CHOOSE to follow what the music industry wants instead of following their heart and make music for the sake of making music. It's always about the money, which is really sad.

Yes, I do. Sometimes, they just never fit into that stupid mold, and lose their contract, if not their career, because the """brains""" of the music industry don't know how to market them.
