Funny that you ask if anything can be balanced.. The fact is, NOTHING is exactly balanced in our solar system... Quantum Mechanics allow us to see that if an atom itself is not balanced in its own gravity, nothing can be balanced.

So really, nothing is balanced, you answered your own question. :)

I wonder how you're picturing this, but I have an idea. Think about a see-saw (if they still exist these days). The flat board (where two kids sit, one on each end) tilts on a point of some sort. One kid pushes his legs to rise from the ground while the other sinks to it, and vice versa. If they weigh the same and stop pushing, they can theoretically come to rest with the flat board "parallel" to the ground.

Now picture some flat object sitting on the "round" (spherical) earth. There is still at least one point of contact between the earth and the flat object, though since the earth isn't perfectly spheroid (think: mountains, valleys, etc.), there may be more than one point of contact. Heck, it probably looks as though the earth underneath the flat object is flat itself, but that's only because the object is so relatively small compared to the earth that it appears to touch at every point of itself.

Am I making sense?

Anyway, if the earth were perfectly spheroid, there would be only one point of contact between it and any object resting on it. (A "tangent" point, perhaps.) As long as no other forces are acting on the object, the force of gravity keeps the object from floating into space, and as that force is applied equally to all points of the object, it's "balanced."
