There are three book series* and one classic that have had a tremendous impact on me.

I was wondering what books have had a significant affect on you.

My set is:
Dune* by Frank Herbert
Ender's Game* by Orson Scott Card
Hatchet* by Gary Paulsen
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

The Bible - good pick!
My friend suggested the Wheel of Time series to me...it's on my list
My mom is reading Marley and Me! lol

BTW I highly recommend all the books I listed, esp sci-fi fans.

Other recommendations I have for simply interesting books are the Eragon and Bartimaeus trilogies. They are from different authors but are both compelling fantasy sets.

The Art of War is also a must-read.

Ah yes, The Great Gatsby...good.

Also (I'm adding as I think of more) Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were excellent short novels. (by Mark Twain, for those of you who live in a hole - jk)

How could I forget To Kill A Mockingbird?
A most excellent and deep book!

Ender's game is a moving story.
If you like somewhat younger-reader based books, "The miracle of miss willie." is a winner.
Scripturally, "The book of Mormon" is also moving as all get out. Jesus and stuff.
When I was a kid I loved "the outsiders."

It sounds like you are a sci-fi fan though... so read george martin's fire and ice series. They are very very worth it. Also, the first 4 of robert jordan's wheel of time series.

Okay here goes....

Mutation, by Robin Cook: This book is scary in the scariest way possible - it seems so plausible that gene therapy and the cloning craze may actually make this scenario possible. Really makes you stop and think - and it's a great read.

Lord of the Flies, by : How close to being uncivilized and bestial we are! When we look at the world scene today, this book almost seems prophetic.

The Taming of the Shrew, by Shakespear: quite possibly the best love story and at the same time, the most hilarious situation comedy ever written. Billy will always be the best! I'm still laughing, 20 years later.

The Bible, by God
Nuff said.

My Thirteenth Winter and Reach for the Moon - both by Samantha Abeel. The first is a memoir about Samantha's life and dealing with a learning disability. It mirrors my own life to some degree. It also shows that we all have some type of challenge or obstacle that we need to learn how to face and either overcome or learn how to cope with it.

Game of Thrones
Clash of Kings
Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows

All are by George R.R. Martin - They are a fantasy series that I became hooked by right from the start - currently waiting for the next installment to come out. Not sure what the title is going to be yet.

Ok I am pulling out a bit of the lame card but the last book that made me cry was Marley and Me. I also have been taking my dog on more regular walks ever since. The book before that was March by Geraldine Brooks. It was hard to read with the war in Iraq but very interesting and worth the tears.

When, I read Hatchet, I thought the story was really stupid, and the kid as well. Well, maybe I'm just like that since I absolutely HATED Bridge to Terabithia and wasn' t too nice on The Giver.

I think I can safely say that I have been moved by the Harry Potter books :) and I really loved the Kite Runner.

Wow so many great book have been mentioned and many of them have definitely made me think "outside the box". But, life changing books are rare.. and Only two books have ever changed or improved my character.. they are Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi and Slapstick by Kurt Vonnegut. Both have made me not only think but also inspire me to live a more meaningful and productive life.. I hope I don't fail..
