I don't know where you get that "always," paleface. Just off the bat, I can remember waking up in the front seat of my car one Sunday morning parked in the front yard of a church about 60 miles from home. Another time, what sobered me up was this burly SOB throwing me back out a window to his house that I'd crawled through in the wee hours of the morning. I'd never seen him or the house before in my life. He didn't see any humor whatever in the situation.

I don't know for sure, I think it's homing instinct, like horses have...I had a friend that I'd have to go scrape off the stairs some mornings - he'd make it back to the building but couldn't get up the 4 fights of stairs to his apartment. One day I followed his wardrobe up to the 3rd floor and covered him with a blanket! Man, those were the DAYS!

Not true!

We once had a drunk come to our door in the middle of the night, furious because we had changed the locks and moved into his house while he was out! We called the police. The guy was one neighbourhood off and on the even side of a street headed the wrong direction!

It was scary at the time, but has become pretty funny with the passing of time. ; )

I've never remembered and wouldn't believe my drunk friends answer to that question , I suppose the urge to sleep it off in my own bed is the driving force .
