My Mother was a white girl in the south during the teens and 1920s. As a child she and her other playmates would go to the
"Black Church" and stand on the outside of the church where the windows were opened due to the heat. They would stand and listen as the congregation inside would sing their praises to the Lord. The Lord is merciful and does everything He can to insure that all children will hear his word.

It started around WW II. It ended (in most places) in the early 1990's. In the South, most blacks went into the balcony of the church, or sat on the back rows. Few places had all black churches. In the1940's black churches began to spring up in any place where blacks lived.

I think that has more to do with segregation. "Black" people had their own church (you don't need a building to have church) So your real question should be more about segregation.
