What do you mean, for how long? As far as I know, Cain killed Able forever. He died, never to return. If you're asking how long it took Cain to kill Able, then I don't know.

time elapsed:
cain hitting abel on the head from behind -- 2 secs.
abel falling and looking back what hit him -- 3 secs.
kickin abel's face and stabbing his heart -- 7 secs.
choking abel's neck and cursing him -- 48 secs.
total of about 1 minute!

Couldn't tell you how long it took (it was a bit before my time), but I can tell you this much--it was permanent, all right.
