No matter what I do, it seems like I always sink when I swim backstoke. My coaches say it's because I don't keep my head up high enough, but even when I do that, I can't keep my feet above the water and stay afloat. Is there anything I can do?

1. no matter what you do?
then dont.
2. it seems you always sink?
try stretching your arms up farther while lying on your back on the water, face up on the ceiling if its indoor pool but please consider practicing inhaling deeply and slowly until your lungs get fully expanded then try hold it for 20 sec.
3. can't keep your feet afloat?
i was a varsity swimmer and it doesn't matter if you can't keep your toes on the water as long you can keep your face and torso afloat.

there are many kinds of approaches conscerning difficulties on diffrent problems
perhaps you are too tense on the water or not that comfortable performing exercises or strokes

the perfect backstroke is depended on:
1.your head should be above the water surface by putting your chin on your chest (and get the air out of you nose so the water wont disturb you)
2.your stomach should be also over the water surface.
3.your feet should be straight and you have to kick hard.
4.move your arms as far and strong as you can.

You need to kick really hard.Keep your legs kinda of together dont do huge big kicks. Really pull with your arms and rotate! Fast turn off the wall and long undulation coming off the wall. you should be past the flags before coming up! also kind of meditate before your race and picture your race in your mind. you need to get mentally prepared

Work on your stroke.
The stronger your stroke, the easier it is to stay afloat.

work on building up your leg strength by kickboarding a lot, then try to perfect your stroke using a buoy
