For me, "Signs" would be right up there, but I would have to say "The Exorcist".
That movie STILL freaks me out every time I see it.

The 'Nightmare on Elm Street' movies will forever be the scariest movies in my opinion, mainly because Freddy wasn't your average horror movie character - He had um, personality I guess (and could even be humorous on occasions) and he would attack at a person's most vulnerable state, while sleeping. I saw my first Nightmare on Elm Street film when I was so young! Growing up, you'd be afraid of the closet monster, whatever, and you always thought you could throw yourself back into bed, cover up tight in your blankets and be safe - But Freddy threw all those feelings of security out the window! LOL.

Also, I feel some of the best horror movies are the ones that don't "show" everything, where you're forced to use your imagination.

LOL to Soulsearching that answered below me - I've never seen the movie you described, but it sounds good and I must admit I even got goosebumps reading your descriptions of the movie! Think I'll have to check my local video store to see if they have it. (Or maybe I shouldn't, huh?:O)

For me it was Poltergeist. I have only seen the first movie. I saw it during the day and I was fine. But when nighttime came, the things I went through. Wouldn't sleep in my bed because I was afraid it would start shaking. I propped myself up on the sofa where I could see the top of the stairs (through the reflection in the top of the sliding glass doors), the front door, etc. It took a couple night's before I would actually try to sleep in my bed. And I was in my mid-twenties!!
I heard that a lot of strange things happened when they were making the movie.

I have 3 for you to pick from, 2 of them have already been mentioned: The Exorcist & Psycho. But how about The Sixth Sense, I think that is pretty spooky.
But I must admit that The Exorcist scared the h___ out of me the first time I saw it in 1975!

SUSPERIA! By far the scariest movie for me. To this day - and I have had many days in between first seeing this movie in my teens - while baby sitting - on the second floor - in an apartment that was ALL WINDOWS - it remains the scariest movie for me. The scene I can remember is the girl goes up the stairs, she feels somewhat safe cause she is on the second floor. She hears a slight scrathing... scritch, scritch, scritch... on the window. She comes forward, but is really not too afraid - after all she is on the second floor. She gets closer, the music is spooky - she gets even closer. Finally her face is nearly up to the cold dark glass of the window - and she sees red eyes glowing - but is mesmerized. As she gets closer - BAM - CRASH - yikes!!! A big ugly hand crashes through the window and grabs her by the neck. Now, I have never watched this movie since but I remember her being stabbed so many times that her heart is seen in her chest and she falls through the window in the roof above the staircase and is hung on a wire. TO THIS DAY.... I can nnot look at a dark window on a cool fall night - I fear to see the glowing red eyes - or to see anything out there looking in. So it is gory - but for me the suspense of her climbing the staircase and moving towards the window is something I can barely withstand.

Poltergeist 1 and 2 (it's a tie). The third isn't so good on account that the ending had to be modified since the lead actress died during the filming... now that's spooky!

cut-off date - Brittany Murphy and its very underrated enable the nicely suited one in - creepy/ unhappy/ unusual Wind kick back - very eerie The return - so so yet gave me the jumps Silent Hill - very creepy! lifeless Silence - bit tongue in cheek yet frightening too The dark - nicely strange dark Water - eastern psychological variety The messengers - jumpy ignored call - so so Grudge (one million/2/3) - enjoyed those yet ultimately its right down to flavor i assume Shutter Island (no longer extremely a frightening yet a powerful stressful secret) ...Darkness (I save remembering ones! haha!) The Changeling (1980 action picture, no longer the single with Angie Jolie in... regardless of the shown fact that thats magnificent too!) Burrowers Deadbirds regardless of handed off to infant Jane (no longer strictly a horror/ frightening yet i got here across it extremely chilling) Resident Evil (tacky yet enjoyable) IT (scared the crap out of me that one) 1408 The Entity (horrid horrid action picture!!!) Oh, and that i havent seen them yet Im reliably pronounced that look after, consultation 9 and Case 39 are all rather good i will could desire to save a watch out for undesirable seed... Oh yeah - and the single Em pronounced - REC - scared the fudge out of me too!
